Title: Alaska juvenile Steller Sea Lion Telemetry Dataset from the Eastern Aleutian Islands, 2000-2002
Short Name: AFSC/NMML: Alaska Steller Sea Lion Telemetry Data 2000-2002
Status: On Going
Creation Date: 2019
Abstract:

To better understand potential mechanisms underlying continued population declines of Steller sea lions in Alaska, we captured and deployed satellite-linked transmitters on 30 juvenile (ages 5-21 months) Steller sea lions during 2000-2003 to better understand habitat use, movements, and foraging behavior among the among the eastern Aleutian Islands.

Purpose:

These data were used in publications of sea lion diving behavior and habitat use (Loughlin et al. 2003; Fadely et al. 2005) and for several analyses associated with Endangered Species Act Biological Opinions.

Technical Environment

Description:

Data are preserved as 'raw' text files distributed by Argos/CLS America. The format of these files has changed over the years, but the data have been maintained in a Microsoft Access database. This database was queried to produce this dataset in CSV form.

Data Quality

Representativeness:

Positional fixes calculated as latitude and longitude by Service Argos with error expressed as location quality, based on satellite up-links from the animal-borne instrument.

Quality Control Procedures Employed:

No quality control procedures have been employed. This data set is an archive of the Argos messages as transmitted from tags deployed on wild animals in challenging environments. All attempts have been made to preserve the state of the data as delivered from Argos.

Data Management

Have Resources for Management of these Data Been Identified?: No
Approximate Percentage of Budget for these Data Devoted to Data Management: Unknown
Do these Data Comply with the Data Access Directive?: Yes
Is Access to the Data Limited Based on an Approved Waiver?: No
If Distributor (Data Hosting Service) is Needed, Please Indicate: Yes
Approximate Delay Between Data Collection and Dissemination: Unknown
If Delay is Longer than Latency of Automated Processing, Indicate Under What Authority Data Access is Delayed:

Data are not processed. However, data are distributed from Argos with variable timing.

Actual or Planned Long-Term Data Archive Location: Other
If World Data Center or Other, Specify: DataONE (research workspace node)
Approximate Delay Between Data Collection and Archiving: Unknown
How Will the Data Be Protected from Accidental or Malicious Modification or Deletion Prior to Receipt by the Archive?:

IT Security and Contingency Plan for the system establishes procedures and applies to the functions, operations, and resources necessary to recover and restore data as hosted in the Western Regional Support Center in Seattle, Washington, following a disruption.

Lineage

Lineage Statement:

This dataset represents data published in Fadely et al. (2005). During 2000-2002, 30 immature Steller sea lions were captured on haul-out sites in the northern Gulf of Alaska and Aleutian Islands on land or in water. Captures occurred during February-March of each year and during November 2001. Sea lions were physically or chemically restrained and satellite tags were attached to the dorsal pelage near the shoulders using quick-setting epoxy. All sea lions were immature juveniles between 5-21 months old, estimated assuming mid-June birth dates and based on capture date, tooth eruption, and sea lion size. Because of size overlap within this age group some ages may have been incorrectly estimated.

Telemetry data files were delivered from Argos/CLS America to the Alaska Ecosystems Program via direct electronic download, email or compact disc, and decoded using Argos/CLS America and All data were obtained through Service Argos, Inc. (Argos 1996) and decoded using SATPAK software or a data analysis program (DAP; Wildlife Computers Inc.), and maintained in Microsoft Access. See Fadely et al. (2005) for lineage details.
