Title: Alaska Steller Sea Lion and Northern Fur Seal Argos Telemetry Data Archive
Short Name: AFSC/NMML: Alaska Steller Sea Lion and Northern Fur Seal Argos Telemetry Data Archive
Status: In Work
Abstract:

The Alaska Ecosystems Program of the NOAA Alaska Fisheries Science Center National Marine Mammal Laboratory conducts research and monitoring on Steller sea lions and northern fur seals in the Bering Sea, Aleutian Island, and Gulf of Alaska marine ecosystems. Our research projects focus primarily on abundance, trends, distribution, and foraging behavior. As part of this work, deployment of satellite-linked telemetry tags are a primary research tool. This data set represents all data from these tags deployed on all species and across a variety of research projects and collaborations. Locations are calculated and provided by the Argos satellite system (http://www.argos-system.org/). In many cases, the data messages also include encoded behavior data (e.g. dive behavior, haul-out behavior) and additional software is required to decode these data. Data are, generally, in the same format as originally delivered from Argos/CLS America and no quality assurance or quality control measures have been implemented.

Purpose:

Long-term archival and management of data from animal borne satellite tags is a key responsibility of the Alaska Ecosystem Program. Data from these tags are transmitted from the tag to the Argos satellite system and delivered via electronic download or monthly compact discs. Data are, generally, in the same format as originally delivered from Argos/CLS America and no quality assurance or quality control measures have been implemented. Additional processing of data after delivery is dependent upon the scientific question(s), tag programming specifics and the tag manufacturer and model. Projects and publications that produce more refined data products derived from these data will have separate metadata entries and will reference this record.

Data Access Procedure:

The data set is in the process of being archived with the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information. Once the archival process is complete and verified, the data set will be publicly available.

Data Access Constraints:

The data set is in the process of being archived with the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information. Once the archival process is complete and verified, the data set will be publicly available.

Data Use Constraints:

User must read and fully comprehend the metadata prior to use. Applications or inferences derived from the data should be carefully considered for accuracy. While every effort has been made to ensure that these data are accurate and reliable within the limits of the current state of the art, NOAA cannot assume liability for any damages caused by any errors or omissions in the data, nor as a result of the failure of the data to function on a particular system. Distribution Information

Distribution 1

CC ID: 241806
Download URL: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/
File Name: Not available
Description:

Data files are not currently available. The data set is in the process of being archived with the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information. Once the archival process is complete and verified, the data set will be publicly available through NCEI.

Technical Environment

Description:

Data are preserved as 'raw' text files distributed by Argos/CLS America. The format of these files has changed over the years and use of these data files will require expert knowledge of the various Argos data formats. Additional software or code will be required to properly parse the data and, in most cases, software from the tag manufacturer will be required to decode additional behavior data transmitted by the tag.

Data Quality

Quality Control Procedures Employed:

No quality control procedures have been employed. This data set is an archive of the Argos messages as transmitted from tags deployed on wild animals in challenging environments. All attempts have been made to preserve the state of the data as delivered from Argos.

Data Management

Have Resources for Management of these Data Been Identified?: No
Approximate Percentage of Budget for these Data Devoted to Data Management: 0
Do these Data Comply with the Data Access Directive?: No
Is Access to the Data Limited Based on an Approved Waiver?: No

Approximate Delay Between Data Collection and Archiving: Unknown
How Will the Data Be Protected from Accidental or Malicious Modification or Deletion Prior to Receipt by the Archive?:

IT Security and Contingency Plan for the system establishes procedures and applies to the functions, operations, and resources necessary to recover and restore data as hosted in the Western Regional Support Center in Seattle, Washington, following a disruption.

Lineage Statement:

These data are represented as a zipped archive of all messages and data files delivered from Argos/CLS America to the Alaska Ecosystems Program. Data may have been delivered via direct electronic download, email or CD. The message formats have changed over the years and are preserved as close to the 'as delivered' state as possible.
