Title: National Coral Reef Monitoring Program: Shallow Water Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) Profiles for selected locations across the Mariana Archipelago in 2014
Short Name: NCRMP: CTDs Marianas
Status: In Work
Abstract:

Near-shore shallow water Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) surveys provided vertical profiles of temperature, salinity, and turbidity providing indications for water masses and local sea water chemistry changes. These surveys were conducted to characterize the spatial structure of the physical and chemical properties of the ocean environment influencing the living coral reef resources observed during REA and towed-diver surveys. Water samples were collected at the shallow water CTD sites to examine near-shore water quality. Shallow CTD casts are vertical profiles (max 30 meter depth, downcast only) of water column conductivity, temperature, and pressure (Sea-Bird Electronics, SBE19-plus; accuracy of 0.005 S m-1 in conductivity, 0.0002C in temperature, and 0.1% in pressure). A transmissometer (Wetlabs Inc; provides profiles of beam transmittance, related to turbidity) and a dissolved oxygen sensor (Sea-Bird Electronics, SBE43; accuracy of 2% of saturation) are also attached. Data are collected by lowering the CTD in a profiling mode from a small boat at a descent rate of approximately 0.5 to 0.75m s-1 to a maximum depth of 30m. Data processing was performed using Seabird Instrument's SeaSoft SBE Data Processing Software (http://www.seabird.com/software/SBEDataProcforWindows.htm).

Purpose:

The NOAA National Coral Reef Monitoring Program (NCRMP) details a long term approach to provide an ecosystem perspective via monitoring climate, fish, benthic, and socioeconomic variables in a consistent and integrated manner. The NCRMP is intended to coordinate various NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) biological, physical, and human dimensions activities into a cohesive NOAA-wide effort. Through the implementation of the NCRMP, NOAA will be able to clearly and concisely communicate results of national-scale monitoring to national, state, and territorial policy makers, resource managers, and the public on a periodic basis.

Coral Reef Ecosystem Program (CREP) Data Sharing Recommendations, version 9.0 updated August 12, 2015:

CREP welcomes the opportunity to collaborate on research issues contributing to the scientific basis for better management of marine ecosystems. CREP has a very diverse set of field activities that generates large volumes of data using an array of data collection protocols.

The following recommendations are for your consideration as you use this data:

1) Data analyses should take all field exigencies into account. The most effective way to do this would be active collaboration with CREP principal investigators.

2) In all presentations, product releases, or publications using data generated by CREP, proper acknowledgement of both CREP and the individuals responsible for data collection is expected. Citing the DOI (if available) is preferred, a non-DOI example is listed below.

3) If you collect or generate data for the same study areas, CREP requests that you share relevant information on complimentary data collections.

4) Those receiving data are strongly urged to inform the CREP Data Management Team of any errors and discrepancies that are discovered during the course of using these data. They are further urged to bring to the attention of the Team all problems and difficulties encountered in using these data. This information is necessary in order to improve the collections and to facilitate more efficient and economical data processing and retrieval. The users are asked to supply copies of any missing data that may be located, and to provide information as to significant subsets and special aggregations of data that are developed in using the material provided.

"This publication makes use of data products provided by the Coral Reef Ecosystem Program (CREP), Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), with funding support from the NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) and the NOAA Ocean Acidification Program. The analysis and interpretations presented here are solely that of the current authors”

Technical Environment

Description:

See the data file for instruments used during each cast.

Data processing was performed using Seabird Instrument's SeaSoft SBE Data Processing Software (http://www.seabird.com/software/SBEDataProcforWindows.htm). Data format is discreet, tabular (formatted, space delimited ASCII) files for each profile, with a full header as provided by SeaSoft. Raw file extension is HEX, processed file extension is CNV. The header contains latitude, longitude and other location information, as well as all data processing steps and settings. All dates and times are UTC. All positions are WGS84 decimal degrees.

Data Quality

Accuracy:

These oceanographic data are preliminary data and have not been screened for accuracy.

Completeness Report:

The data are believed to be complete. -9.99-E29 values in the data, where they exist, indicate that this observation/analysis was not conducted for the sample record where it appears.

Conceptual Consistency:

The same methods of data collection are used at each surveyed site.

Quality Control Procedures Employed:

The data is quality controlled by CREP personnel after the data is downloaded from the instrument.

Data Management

Have Resources for Management of these Data Been Identified?: Yes
Approximate Percentage of Budget for these Data Devoted to Data Management: Unknown
Do these Data Comply with the Data Access Directive?: Yes
Is Access to the Data Limited Based on an Approved Waiver?: No
Approximate Delay Between Data Collection and Dissemination: Unknown
Actual or Planned Long-Term Data Archive Location: NCEI-CO
Approximate Delay Between Data Collection and Archiving: Unknown
How Will the Data Be Protected from Accidental or Malicious Modification or Deletion Prior to Receipt by the Archive?:

The data resides in an MS Access database, which is maintained and regularly backed up by PIFSC ITS.

Process Steps

Process Step 1

CC ID: 381459
Description:

The CTD package is deployed off a small boat using a hand line. The CTD is held just under the surface for 1 minute to cycle water through the instrument and tubing. Afterwards the CTD is lowered at an even pace to a depth between 20-30m. A GPS waypoint is taken at the beginning of the cast to mark the position and time.

Process Contact: Charles W Young
Email Address: charles.young@noaa.gov

Process Step 2

CC ID: 381460
Description:

The raw data are processed by the SeaBird data processing software (http://www.seabird.com/software/sbe-data-processing) using the following steps:

Data conversion

Filter

AlignCTD

Loop Edit

Derive

Bin Average

Each header in the raw and processed files is manipulated to include the latitude, longitude, and date/time (in UTC) of the cast. The result is a standard ascii .cnv file, in addition to the raw .hex file.
