Process Steps

Process Step 1

CC ID: 836617
Description:

• Go to https://www.navcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=lightListWeeklyUpdates and download the 10 xml documents

• Import xmls in to Excel (Data, Get External Data, From Other Sources, From XML Data Import) and select the "Existing worksheet" option (beginning data import in cell A1)

• Remove unnecessary columns or rows and rename column names

• Combine the 10 spreadsheets into one, checking that the column names match up

• Sort columns latitude and longitude and delete features missing coordinate info

• Remove line breaks, fix typos and grammar issues, remove partial sentences where column values have been truncated and standardize attributes where these were easily discernable

• Change necessary latitude and longitude values to negative (i.e. for features in the southern and western hemispheres, respectively)

• Convert Excel To Table (Conversion Tools, Excel) and load the spreadsheet into ArcMap

• Display XY data and export data as a feature class

• Perform visual inspection of the features plotted in ArcMap and modify/delete as needed

• For district 8, populate the location and structure fields with info from bank, mile, structure up and structure down fields

• Delete unnecessary fields

• Check geometry and project data into WGS 1984 Auxiliary Sphere
